Composer Notes: I wrote "Little Babe" back during my bachelor's degree originally as a one-verse benediction. I later expanded it into an anthem by writing the second verse. My influences at the time were many of the 100 Carols for Choirs by Oxford. I am slightly surprise to see that this little carol (one of my oldest) clearly that shows one of my basic compositional techniques began from the beginning: that harmony and melody are interdependent and each can be subservient to the other. I think that the harmonies in this carol are some of my best. I had a friend tell me that "If you stop on some of the chords, the harmonies don't line up." To which I responded: "Then don't stop." During the writing of "Little Babe" I was as concerned with each individual part's melody and with the overall harmony.
