Composer Notes: During my Master's Degree I was asked to write a three-part motet in Palestrina-style counterpoint. I wrote "Agnus Dei". My professor told me I was one of only two students that actually wrote music, not just notes. Not satisfied, I went home and expanded it to its present four-part, studying Renaissance scores whenever I was unsure as for what was permitted. When I re-presented it to my professor he said: "Palestrina would be proud". I don't know about Palestrina, but my choirs like it, just fine. Performance note: I never put all of the expressions in my music. I was always there to tell the choir. Follow the melodies and you'll be fine. |
