Guatemala - 2012

Day 1 - Wed., June 27 - Welcome Back

Back to Index of All Days

Back to friends and family here.

Not much to report on the plane except two nice conversations. First was in the DFW airport with a young engineer going for his first job interview in Houston. The second was on the plane to Houston with a new Spanish teacher heading (eventually) to Antigua to study. Hope he and I hook up again.

Sorry this picture is so bad, but I was in a moving vehicle in Guatemala. It is pretty crazy.

Anyway, the arch is part of an old Spanish aqueduct.

A 225 year old picture Manuel (the husband) is restoring for an important family's collection. The hat makes it obvious that the subject is an "Obispo" a Bishop of the Catholic church, so therefore important.

Manuel is one of the best restorers in the area. The work is very detailed and slow. This one is on his own time. He can only work on Sundays, when he is at home during the day. He needs good sunlight for the detailed work.

Fortunately, Maria Elsa (mother) did not work Wed afternoon, so we went out.

This is a new organic chocolate and spices shop. Maria likes to cook and loves chocolate.

Sampling chocolate. We bought some chocalate covered guava (good) and macademia (poison for me [alergic], but Maria loves it).

Finalmente! My first Jaimaica (high-my-ca). My favorite drink....probably anywhere. And this place "Casa de Escobar" is the best! Pricey for dinner ($40 a person for amazing steaks), but just a bit pricey for drinks ($3 for a big glass of Jaimaica). Here the Jaimaica is just strong enough and has some special spice. I could drink this everyday. I guess it is good I can't find it in Texas. :(

Back to my room. Same one each of my 3 times in Maria Elsa's house.

One change this year: a double bed. It takes up more of the room, which is small. Reason: each of the other rooms have double beds in case couples come. It gives here the possibility of another guest (and more income).

The "Welcome Back" title is for me. I do feel back at home with Maria Elsa. It is still a bit strange and my mind is digging up its Spanish as fast as it can. But it is getting more back to normal quickly.
